Painly doesn't collect your data. Everything you log — symptoms, severity, notes, anything you say to the voice logger — stays on your device. Painly has no servers, creates no account for you, and doesn't share your information with us or with anyone else. The rest of this page is the detailed version of that one fact.
Painly is a symptom and pain tracker. When you log an entry, it records:
All of this is stored locally on your device, using Apple's SwiftData framework. It is never transmitted to a server — Painly doesn't have one. If you delete the app, this data is deleted with it. Painly does not use iCloud sync, so your entries exist only on the device you logged them on.
If you use Painly's voice logging feature, your speech is transcribed entirely on-device using Apple's Speech framework, configured to require on-device recognition — your voice recording is never sent to Apple's servers or anyone else's for processing. The transcript is used to pre-fill a draft entry for you to review; nothing is saved to your log until you review it and tap Save yourself.
Voice logging requires microphone and speech-recognition permissions, which iOS will ask you to grant the first time you use the feature. You can revoke these at any time in iOS Settings, which will simply disable voice logging — everything else in the app continues to work normally.
Painly uses on-device AI (Apple's Foundation Models framework, part of Apple Intelligence) to generate a doctor-visit summary from your logged entries, and to help parse a spoken description of a symptom into structured fields. Both of these run entirely on your device. Your symptom data is never sent to Apple, to us, or to any third-party AI service to produce these summaries.
The "Explain to Someone" feature does not use AI at all — its message is generated by a deterministic template running locally, from the same on-device data.
Visit Prep and Explain to Someone let you share a generated summary using iOS's standard share sheet (for example, to Messages, Mail, or your clipboard). This only happens when you explicitly tap "Share" or "Share or Copy" and choose where it goes. Painly does not automatically send this information anywhere. Once you share something outside the app, its handling is governed by whatever app or service you shared it to, not by Painly.
Because your data never leaves your device, its security is governed by your device's own protections — passcode, Face ID/Touch ID, and iOS's standard app sandboxing, which keeps Painly's data inaccessible to other apps.
Painly does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children, because it does not collect information at all. Painly is not directed at children and is not designed for use without a parent or guardian's guidance for users under the age required by the App Store in your region.
Painly is a personal journaling and organizational tool. It does not diagnose, treat, or provide medical advice, and nothing it generates — including AI-assisted summaries — should be treated as a substitute for professional medical judgment. Always consult a doctor or other qualified health professional about your symptoms and before making health decisions.
If this policy changes — for example, if a future version of Painly adds optional cloud sync or HealthKit integration — this page will be updated, and the "Last updated" date above will reflect that.
